Conditions of support
Transport costs are covered by Health Insurance, upon medical prescription, in the following situations:
Transportation related to hospitalization (admission and/or discharge from hospital), regardless of the length of hospitalization (full, partial or outpatient).
Transport related to treatments or examinations for patients recognized as having a long-term condition (ALD) and presenting one of the disabilities or impairments defined by the transport prescription framework. This provision, established by the decree of March 10, 2011 (PDF, 95.91 KB) modifies the conditions for covering transport costs for patients recognized as having a long-term condition (ALD). It has applied since June 1, 2011. It stipulates that the medical prescription of transport under an ALD, and therefore outside of other situations that may give rise to the right to cover transport (hospitalization, serial transport, medical appointment, etc.), meets specific cover conditions.
Transport related to treatments or examinations related to an accident at work or an occupational disease.
Ambulance transport, when the patient's condition requires lying down or being monitored.
Long-distance transport (more than 150 km one way).
Serial transport (at least 4 transport trips of more than 50 km each way, over a period of 2 months, under the same treatment).
Please note: The coverage of certain transport also requires prior agreement from the medical service of the Health Insurance: this is the case for long-distance transport, serial transport and transport by plane or scheduled boat.
Support within the framework of an ALD
To cover their transport costs, the patient with an ALD must meet the following 3 cumulative conditions:
He must be recognized as suffering from an ALD.
The transport carried out must be linked to the ALD.
He must present one of the incapacities or deficiencies defined by the transport prescription reference framework set by the decree of December 23, 2006.
When the patient meets these conditions but uses a less expensive mode of transport (personal vehicle transport, public transport), their transport costs may be covered.
Transportation costs can also be covered:
To attend a meeting with the Health Insurance medical service, the regional disability commission, a medical expert (for a social security medical assessment) or an appointment with an approved equipment supplier for the supply of devices (ocular and facial prostheses, foot orthoses, orthoprostheses). In these situations, the meeting serves as a medical prescription and the mode of transport is indicated.
To accompany a child under 16 or a person whose condition requires the assistance of a third party. In this situation, the doctor must specify the need for an accompanying person on the medical prescription.
Outside of these situations, transport is not covered at all by Health Insurance, even if prescribed by a doctor.
